Ghana‘s Armwrestling team1, known as the Golden Arms, showcased remarkable prowess on the first day of the African Games 2023, securing a total of 21 medals. Making its debut at the multi-sport event, Armwrestling left an indelible mark in the competition’s history.
In an impressive display in both men’s and women’s left arm events, Ghana’s pullers clinched four gold medals, ten silver, and seven bronze, setting a new record in the competition.
The journey to victory began with Rachel Lankai and Mabel Yeboah securing second and third places, respectively, earning Ghana its first medals in the event. Blessing Abeka continued the success by defeating Phildaus Bukari in the finals of the women’s 60kg left category.
However, Roselyn Lartey fell short in the women’s 65kg left event, yielding to Marie Laleye of Benin. Similarly, in the men’s 55kg left final, Daniel Acquah and Sanaa Abdul Somed secured silver and bronze, with the gold going to Egypt‘s Omar Ibrahim.
Yet, the Golden Arms surged ahead as Godwin Sackey and Edward Asamoah emerged victorious in the men’s 75kg left and 95kg left categories after intense competition.
With this outstanding achievement, Ghana’s medal tally now stands at 26, placing them seventh on the overall medal table. The pursuit for over 50 medals continues as the Ghanaians gear up for day two of the competition.
