The National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NaCCA) has revealed a significant change in the Senior High School (SHS) curriculum, stating that students who opt for elective science will no longer be mandated to undertake Core Mathematics and Integrated Science.
According to Professor Edward Appiah, the Director General of NaCCA, this alteration forms part of the revamped curriculum aimed at enhancing the educational system. Speaking to JoyNews on February 6, he elucidated that students specializing in science already extensively cover Mathematics and Science subjects, rendering the additional courses unnecessary.
This adjustment is slated to commence in the 2024/2025 academic year, marking a pivotal shift in the educational landscape. Professor Appiah emphasized, “With the new curriculum, Science students will only undertake Core Mathematics, which is additional Maths, as it is deemed adequate to facilitate their subject requirements.”
He clarified that the inclusion of Integrated Science for Science students in SHS was previously necessitated by deficiencies in the junior high school science curriculum. However, with the refinement of the junior high school syllabus, there is no longer a need for redundancy in SHS.
The move underscores NaCCA's commitment to optimizing educational efficiency and relevance, ensuring that students receive a tailored and streamlined academic experience conducive to their chosen fields of study.
