The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GFEC) has issued a directive to Prof. Philip Daku Osei, Vice-Chancellor of the University for Development Studies (UBIDS), regarding his continued stay in office beyond the compulsory retirement age of sixty (60) years.
In a letter addressed to Prof. Osei, dated January 04, 2024, the GFEC emphasized the statutory retirement age for all public servants in the Republic of Ghana, highlighting that the Vice-Chancellor reached the age of sixty on November 30, 2023.
The letter instructed Prof. Osei to hand over his responsibilities to the Pro-Vice Chancellor of UBIDS, Prof. Emmanuel K. Derbile.
Prof. Derbile is expected to act in the position as per the statutes of the university until the appointment of a substantive Vice-Chancellor.
The GFEC urged the Governing Council of UBIDS to take the necessary steps in the appointment process.
Expressing appreciation for Prof. Osei's service to the university, the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission, on behalf of both the Commission and UBIDS, wished him success in his future endeavours.
The letter was signed by Prof. Ahmed Jinapor Abdulai, Director-General of the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission, and copies were sent to the Minister of Education, Chairman of the Council at UBIDS, Pro-Vice Chancellor, Registrar, Finance Director, and Head of IPPD at GTEC.
The Commission expressed confidence in Prof. Osei's cooperation during this transition period.
