At the ongoing 13th African Games hosted at the Accra International Conference Center (AICC), Egyptian table tennis players showcased their dominance by clinching gold medals in both the men's and women's singles as well as team events.
In the men's team event, the Egyptian trio of Omar Assar, Youssef Abdelaziz, and Mohamed El-Beiali displayed exceptional skill and teamwork to defeat Nigeria's Olajide Omotayo, Qadri Aruna, and Taiwo Mati. Assar started strong by securing a 3-0 victory against Omotayo, followed by Abdelaziz's impressive 3-1 win over Aruna. El-Beiali sealed the deal with a 3-1 victory against Mati, leading Egypt to a decisive 3-0 triumph over Nigeria.
Similarly, in the women's category, the Egyptian team continued their unbeaten streak since 2011 by defeating Nigeria 3-0 to claim the gold medal. Dina Meshref, Hana Goda, and Mariam Alhodaby showcased their prowess as they outplayed their Nigerian counterparts Offiong Edem, Hope Udoaka, and Fatimo Bello. Since dethroning Nigeria at Maputo 2011 in Mozambique, the Egyptian women led by Meshref have been dominating the event.
In the history of the games, Nigeria has won the women's title seven times from 1978 to 2007, while Egypt has secured the title since 2011 in the women's encounter.
