President Akufo-Addo has informed Parliament of his nomination of Justice Gertrude Torkonoo as Chief Justice, calling for her speedy approval in a letter to the legislature.
The letter was read by the 1st Deputy Speaker of Parliament, who referred the nomination to the Appointments Committee for vetting.
The President's nomination comes as the current Chief Justice, Kwasi Anin Yeboah, is set to retire on May 24, and Akufo-Addo seeks to ensure that there is no leadership vacuum in the judiciary.
In the letter to the Council of State, Akufo-Addo said, “I have decided to begin the process of appointment now. Article 144 (1) of the constitution, which governs the appointment of a Chief Justice, requires that I, first consult with the council of state before seeking the approval of Parliament.”
If approved, Justice Torkornoo will be the third female Chief Justice in the history of Ghana after Justices Georgina Theodora Wood and Sophia Akuffo.
Justice Torkornoo is currently a member of the Supreme Court and will need to be vetted by Parliament before her nomination can be approved.
