The New Patriotic Party (NPP) Flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has pledged to establish common-user processing facilities and equipment in mining districts across Ghana if elected President. This promise aims to promote responsible and sustainable mining practices in the country.
Dr. Bawumia made this commitment during the Third Annual Transformational Dialogue on Small-Scale Mining held in Sunyani. Organized by the University of Energy and Natural Resources, the event provided a platform for discussing pertinent issues in the mining sector.
Emphasizing the need for mining activities to benefit the nation as a whole, Dr. Bawumia outlined his plans to set up common-user processing facilities in various districts. These facilities would streamline mining operations and ensure environmentally friendly processing options for miners.
Additionally, Dr. Bawumia proposed the establishment of Community Environmental Protection Assistants, working in collaboration with the Minerals Commission and Environmental Protection Agency. This initiative aims to enhance environmental protection efforts, particularly regarding safeguarding water bodies from pollution and degradation.
Addressing the issue of illegal mining, commonly known as “galamsey,” Dr. Bawumia stressed the role of common-user processing facilities in combating this menace. By providing legal and efficient processing options, these facilities would deter illegal mining activities and promote adherence to regulatory standards.
Dr. Bawumia reiterated his belief that mining should serve the collective good of the country, prioritizing environmental conservation and community well-being. His vision for the mining sector encompasses sustainable practices that align with broader national development objectives.
Currently on a nationwide campaign tour until the first week of June, Dr. Bawumia's campaign theme, “Bold Solutions for our Future,” underscores his commitment to addressing critical issues facing Ghana. His campaign focuses on engaging with diverse stakeholders, including traditional leaders, youth groups, traders, farmers, students, and the media.
Since his election as the NPP Flagbearer in November 2023, Dr. Bawumia has been actively consulting with various groups across the country. His engagements aim to solicit input, address concerns, and garner support for his vision of transformative leadership in Ghana.
