Dr Chris Jenkins OBE, President of the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF), paid a courtesy visit to the Ga Mantse, Nii Tackie Teiko Tsuru II, during his stay in Accra for the 13th African Games.
The delegation, led by Mr Ben Nunoo Mensah, President of Commonwealth Games Ghana (CGA), included notable figures such as CEO of CGF Madam Katie Sadleir, Vice President of CGF Col. Botsang Tshenyego, President of Commonwealth Games Namibia, and Ezera Tshabangu, Regional Development Manager, Africa & Europe.
Although the Ga Mantse was absent, Dr. Jenkins was warmly received by the Abola Mantse, Nii Ahene Nunoo III, and other esteemed elders of the Ga community, including Akanmajen Manste, Nii Ayi Kai III, and the Nai Wulomo, Chief Priest.
Mr Nunoo Mensah emphasized the importance of meeting the elders of the land as a customary sign of respect, especially given Accra's status as the capital city of Ghana.
During the meeting, Dr Jenkins emphasized the values of peace and unity among Commonwealth nations and stressed the need to create opportunities to foster development across all member countries.
The Abola Mantse, representing the Ga Mantse, appealed to the CGF to consider Ghana as the host for the first Commonwealth Games in Africa. He highlighted the transformative power of sports in promoting development and breaking down barriers such as racism.
In a symbolic gesture, the Nai Wulomo, Chief Priest, performed a libation ceremony and offered prayers for the success of the CGF, peace worldwide, and the leadership of the CGA. He also adorned the CGF delegation with Hyssop, a plant symbolizing spiritual purification.
As a token of appreciation and goodwill, the elders of the Ga state presented Dr. Jenkins with a carving symbolizing unity, while Dr Jenkins reciprocated by presenting a special Commonwealth Timer to the Council, which was received by Nii Ayikai III.
The historic visit was deemed positive and fruitful, with Dr. Jenkins holding crucial meetings and workshops with CGF members in Africa and the board of the Commonwealth Games Association of Ghana.
