Francis Doku, a resident of Nkurakan in the Yilo Krobo municipality of the Eastern region, has been convicted by the Somanya Magistrate Court for selling expired food products. Presided over by Mr. Derek Ocloo, the court handed down a fine of 60 penalty units, equivalent to GH¢ 720.00, to Doku.
Doku pleaded guilty to the charges of selling expired food products, a violation of section 19 of the Yilo Krobo Assembly general sanitation bye-law, 2022.
According to Mr. Martin Abotsi, the Yilo Krobo Municipal Assembly Environmental Health officer, the case arose when environmental health officers conducted an inspection of Doku's shop on November 14, 2023. During the inspection, expired canned drinks were found displayed for sale to the public.
Upon discovery of the expired products, they were confiscated, and Doku was given the opportunity to provide an explanation for selling them. However, he failed to attend the invitation, displaying uncooperative behaviour.
As a result, Doku was summoned to appear in court, where he admitted guilt and was subsequently convicted.
Mr. Abotsi emphasized the seriousness of selling expired products for public consumption, highlighting the significant threat it poses to public health and the risk of food poisoning.
