It tarnishes the reputation of entire Ga Dangbe – Sempe Mantse denounces marriage of 63-year-old priest to 12-year-old

for the Sempe traditional area, Nii Adote Otintor II, has expressed strong disapproval over the recent marriage between a 63-year-old Ga priest and a 12-year-old child, sparking widespread condemnation and a probe by the Chieftaincy Ministry.

The union, which took place in a customary marriage ceremony, involves the sexagenarian Gborbu Wulomo, Nuumo Borketey Laweh XXXIII, and the minor, Naa Ayemoede, raising significant concerns about child welfare and cultural norms.

According to the Mankralo of the Ga State, the act is deemed unwarranted and does not align with the customs of the Ga Dangbe people, igniting public outrage over the substantial age difference and its potential ramifications on the young girl's future.

In response to criticism, the spokesperson for the Gborbu Wulomo defended the action, dismissing the backlash as stemming from ignorance. However, Nii Bortey Kofi Frankwa II, another Ga leader, condemned the marriage, stating that it tarnishes the reputation of the entire Ga Dangbe community.

The controversy has prompted the Chieftaincy Ministry to initiate an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the contentious customary marriage, signalling a commitment to uphold cultural integrity and protect the rights of minors within traditional settings.
