GWCL faces water supply challenges in Mfantseman Municipality due to power interruptions

The (GWCL) has highlighted the significant challenges it faces in supplying water to residents of the Mfantseman Municipality in the . According to Nana Yaw Barima Barnie, the Central and Western Regions Communications Officer, frequent power interruptions and insufficient freshwater inflows are hampering the treatment and distribution of water from the Baifikrom treatment dam.

The Baifikrom Water Treatment Plant, responsible for providing potable water to Saltpond and its surrounding areas, relies on two primary sources of raw water: the Ochi-Nakwa River and a shared dam with the Irrigation Development Authority. However, the current situation presents a double challenge. Firstly, the Ochi-Nakwa River has dried up, making it impossible to pump raw water from this source. Secondly, the dam itself is experiencing critically low water levels, further exacerbating the supply issue.

Nana Yaw Barima Barnie emphasized that the ongoing instability in the power supply regime compounds these difficulties, making it even more challenging for GWCL to address the water supply shortages effectively.

In light of these constraints, GWCL issued a statement urging residents in Saltpond, Mankessim, Biriwa, and neighbouring communities to bear with the company as they navigate through these challenging circumstances. The company assured customers that they are working diligently to mitigate the impact of the water supply challenges and urged patience and understanding during this period of hardship.
