Chairman urges non-politicization of anti-LGBTQ+ bill : Ghana News

Mr. Kwame Ayimadu-Antwi, Chairman of the Constitutional, Legal, and Committee, has cautioned against politicizing the “Promotion of Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill, 2022.”

Speaking at a press conference on Thursday at House in , he emphasized the non-partisan nature of the bill's consideration.

“It is important to note that all Members of agreed that we must prosecute this Bill and therefore, I must warn that any attempt that anybody will want to clothe this Bill with political colors will suffer non-passage of the Bill,” stated the Chairman.

The press conference was in response to an earlier one held by Mr. Samuel Nartey George, the National Democratic Congress () Member of Parliament for Prampram and Lead Sponsor of the Bill. Mr. George expressed frustrations with moving the bill through the consideration stage.

Mr. Ayimadu-Antwi emphasized that the Minority's press conference was in bad faith and urged unity in passing the bill. “Therefore, let no man take some political advantage of the situation,” he added.

He acknowledged varying public opinions on the bill's merits but stressed the need for the House to pass a bill that withstands the test of time. Hungary passing a similar bill to protect children was cited as an example.

The Chairman clarified that the Anti- Bill was not brought under a certificate of urgency, and the Committee was ready to prosecute it whenever the Speaker and Leadership were prepared.

Mr. Ayimadu-Antwi highlighted the significant resources invested in the bill's consideration, underlining the House's commitment to its importance.
