Senegal‘s Young Teranga Lions got off to a flying start with a 1-0 victory over South Sudan at the Accra Sports Stadium in the opening match of the men’s football competition at the 13th African Games.
The game started cautiously, with both teams adopting a physical approach to seize control. However, it was Senegal who broke the deadlock in the first half, courtesy of a fine strike by Sadio Lamine, who curled the ball past South Sudan goalkeeper Godwill Sabio.
In the second half, South Sudan came out determined to find an equalizer. Paul Jawa Mara came close with a long-range effort that narrowly missed the target.
Despite South Sudan’s efforts to level the score, Senegal’s defence remained resolute, thwarting most of their opponent’s attacks.
Senegal had a chance to extend their lead when substitute Philip Yapete found himself in a promising position, but he failed to capitalize on the opportunity, much to the relief of the South Sudanese defence.
In the end, Senegal’s Young Teranga Lions held on to their lead to claim all three points in a hard-fought encounter, signalling a positive start to their campaign in Group B of the tournament.
