In a surprising turn of events during the New Patriotic Party's (NPP) parliamentary elections on Saturday, January 27, 2024, retired Commissioner of Police, George Alex Mensah, faced defeat in the Bekwai primary.
Four candidates vied for the opportunity to replace the incumbent Bekwai MP, Joe Osei-Owusu, who opted not to seek re-election. Retired Commissioner of Police George Alex Mensah was in the running, along with Ralph Poku-Adusei, Henry Opoku-Ware, and Kingsley Opoku Agyemang.
Ralph Poku-Adusei emerged victorious with 662 votes, securing a decisive win over his competitors. Retired Commissioner George Alex Mensah secured 245 votes, Henry Opoku-Ware polled 30 votes, and Kingsley Opoku Agyemang received 1 vote.
Despite receiving an open endorsement from the incumbent MP, Joe Osei-Owusu, the retired Commissioner of Police couldn't secure the delegates' favour. The primary was marked by the unexpected defeat of George Alex Mensah, who had a notable career in law enforcement.
IGP oust tape
It's noteworthy that George Alex Mensah was previously involved in a controversial leaked audio scandal. The audio purportedly revealed a plot to oust the Inspector General of Police, with allegations of manipulation of the 2024 polls for the governing party.
The Bekwai NPP primary results highlight a significant shift in the political dynamics of the constituency, setting the stage for Ralph Poku-Adusei to carry the party's banner in the upcoming parliamentary elections.
