Madam Fatimatu Abubakar, the Minister of Information-designate, has emphasized the importance of combating misinformation, disinformation, and propaganda to protect Ghana's democracy. Speaking at a public forum on countering mis/disinformation and propaganda narratives in the upcoming 2024 elections, Madam Abubakar urged Ghanaians to safeguard the integrity of their democracy by making informed choices.
She highlighted the proliferation of false information and deliberate misinformation in recent years as a significant threat to democratic principles. Madam Abubakar stressed that the integrity of elections is fundamental to democracy and called on citizens to confront these challenges collectively. Upholding the principles of truth, transparency, and accountability is crucial for ensuring that every Ghanaian's voice is heard, she added.
The forum, organized by the Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA), the National Peace Council, and the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), aimed to promote information hygiene and foster decent political discourse ahead of the December 7 polls. Madam Abubakar reiterated the government's commitment to combatting false information and protecting the integrity of the country's democracy.
Mr. Sulemana Braimah, Executive Director of MFWA, highlighted the alarming increase in deliberate attempts to distort Africa's information ecosystem in recent years. He noted the significant impact of misinformation campaigns on elections, particularly in highly polarized political environments like Ghana's. Reverend Dr. Ernest Adu-Gyamfi, Chairman of the NPC, warned of the consequences of misinformation on public trust in institutions and called for unity against this phenomenon.
Ms. Kathleen Addy, Chairperson of the NCCE, emphasized the importance of collaboration among stakeholders in fighting misinformation and advocated for its inclusion in school curricula to educate children about its negative impact. The collective efforts of all stakeholders are crucial in addressing the challenges posed by misinformation and safeguarding Ghana's democracy.
