Dr Abed-Nego Bandim, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Member of Parliament (MP) for Bunkpurugu, has emphasized the urgent need for action to combat climate change and its impacts. He called on the Government to invest in climate resilience measures as part of efforts to address the phenomenon.
During a debate on a proposal to empower the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to aid in the fight against climate change, Dr Bandim highlighted the importance of examining the Government's policies and actions that may hinder the fight against climate change.
He criticized the Government's distribution of locally made clay coal pots in rural constituencies, pointing out that such actions promote the use of charcoal and firewood, contributing to deforestation and climate change.
Dr. Bandim urged the Government to prioritize the availability of gas for cooking and commercial purposes, particularly in regions like the North East where the gas supply is irregular, forcing residents to rely on firewood.
Highlighting the environmental challenges faced by the North East Region, including desertification, Dr. Bandim stressed the need for coordinated efforts to address climate change. He called for a national dialogue to formulate effective policies and strategies.
Dr Bandim also advocated for diversifying transportation systems, suggesting the development of railways to reduce the reliance on road transportation and mitigate the environmental impact of heavy-duty trucks.
In conclusion, he emphasized the importance of ensuring that all stakeholders, including government agencies, work together effectively to combat climate change and protect the environment.
