Hearts of Oak's new coach, Aboubakar Ouattara, has set a modest target for his team in the ongoing 2023–24 Ghana Premier League season, emphasizing the importance of achieving a respectable position rather than solely focusing on winning the league title.
Ouattara's coaching tenure began on a high note as Hearts of Oak secured a convincing 3-0 victory over Real Tamale United in a match-day 18 encounter. However, in a post-match interview, the Ivorian coach disclosed that his primary objective, as outlined by the board, is not to clinch the league trophy but to steadily improve the team's position in the standings.
“I have not been tasked by the board to win the league. We are trying to move the team up to a respectable position. We can talk about winning the league at the end of the season, but now we are trying to survive,” Ouattara remarked.
Reflecting on his initial observations since assuming the role of head coach, Ouattara acknowledged the abundant talent within the Hearts of Oak squad but stressed the importance of instilling discipline among the players.
“The boys have talent, but the only difference is discipline. Just like diamonds, if you don't polish them, you wouldn't get any value, and polishing these players is not easy,” he explained.
Ouattara also called upon the club's supporters to remain patient and steadfast in their backing, highlighting their integral role in the team's progress.
“I urge the supporters to support the club because it belongs to them, and they should be patient and let all work go into pushing this talent to a high level,” he urged.
Regarding the recent match against Real Tamale United, where Hearts of Oak displayed dominance but squandered several scoring opportunities, Ouattara remained focused on the positives, emphasizing the importance of securing maximum points.
“I am happy about getting the points rather than the squandered chances. For me, I will be happy if we score one goal each in our next nine matches,” he expressed.
Looking ahead, Hearts of Oak, currently positioned 9th on the league table, are gearing up to face Nsoatreman FC on matchday 19 of the season at the Nana Koramasah Sports Complex, as they continue their quest to climb up the standings under Ouattara's guidance.
