The Volta Regional Communication Office of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) addressed and debunked a claim made by Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, the Vice President and Flagbearer of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP). The statement accuses Dr Bawumia of providing misleading information about the existence of a fish landing site project in Keta during a public lecture held at the University of Professional Studies (UPSA) on February 7th, 2024.
Contrary to Dr Bawumia's assertion, the NDC statement states that there is no evidence supporting the establishment of a fish landing site project in Keta or anywhere else in the Volta Region. The NDC accuses the NPP Flagbearer of a deliberate misrepresentation of facts and a blatant disregard for the truth.
The statement, released on Monday, February 12, 2024, recalls that the mention of the fish landing site for Keta was made on November 7th, 2019, by Dr Archibald Letsa, the Volta Regional Minister, during the Hogbetsotso Festival of the Anlos. Subsequent community engagements in Keta, involving representatives from the Transport Ministry, Ghana Ports and Harbour Authority (GPHA), and the Deputy Minister of Fisheries, were held in October 2020. Friends of the Nation, along with Keta Municipal Assembly representatives, also engaged the community in March 2023 about the potential benefits of the project.
The NDC expresses disappointment in the NPP Flagbearer's alleged spreading of lies and misinformation for political gain, particularly regarding a region as vital to the nation's socio-economic fabric as the Volta Region. The statement calls for respect for the people of the Volta Region and their right to accurate information.
The NDC urges the media and the public to scrutinize claims made by political leaders and calls on the ruling NPP and Dr Bawumia specifically to refrain from spreading falsehoods. The party remains committed to promoting transparency, accountability, and honesty in governance, calling on well-meaning citizens to join in the quest for a more truthful and equitable Ghana. The statement is signed by Sorkpa Kafui Agbleze, Communications Officer for Volta NDC.
