Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has unveiled Ghana's ambitious plan to become the first blockchain-powered government in Africa, leveraging cutting-edge technology to combat corruption effectively. Speaking at the 14th Regional Conference and Annual General Meeting of Heads of Anti-Corruption Agencies in Commonwealth Africa, Dr. Bawumia emphasized the transformative potential of blockchain technology in promoting transparency and accountability across governance systems.
The Vice President outlined how blockchain technology's immutable ledger capabilities could revolutionize Ghana's fight against corruption by enabling comprehensive transaction tracking and data integrity verification. By harnessing blockchain, the government aims to enhance transparency and facilitate corruption detection and prevention measures at every level of governance.
Dr. Bawumia underscored Ghana's commitment to digital innovation, citing successful initiatives like the ghana.gov portal, which has streamlined electronic payment services and generated substantial revenue for the government. He highlighted the significant impact of digitalization on passport application processes and public sector payroll management, resulting in increased efficiency and cost savings.
Furthermore, the integration of the GhanaCard into public sector databases has facilitated the identification and removal of ghost pensioners and fraudulent National Service Scheme beneficiaries, leading to significant financial savings for the nation. Dr. Bawumia emphasized the importance of investing in digital forensics and security infrastructure to bolster anti-corruption efforts across Africa.
In his address, Dr. Bawumia stressed the potential of the Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC), or eCedi, as a game-changing tool in the fight against corruption. He highlighted the eCedi's ability to enhance financial transparency, mitigate fraud risks, and curb illicit financial activities, positioning Ghana as a leader in digital governance and anti-corruption initiatives on the continent.
