The Port of Tema has achieved a significant milestone with the recent arrival of the Maersk Edirne, a 13,676 TEU containership, at the MPS Terminal 3.
This marks the commencement of a new express service, making Tema the first port of call in West Africa.
The vessel, after traversing major hub ports in China and Southeast Asia in under 20 days, underscores the Port of Tema's strategic position as a key maritime gateway.
It is one of thirteen similar-sized vessels deployed on the updated Far East-West Africa service, promising enhanced connectivity and faster transit times.
Razak Ngula, Managing Director of Maersk Ghana Limited, expressed excitement about bringing this express service to customers, emphasizing reduced transit times and increased capacity for West African cargo.
Ngula highlighted the significance of Tema's infrastructure in accommodating such large vessels amidst structural constraints faced by many African ports.
Eva Kwarteng, Import and Export Manager at Nestlé Ghana Limited, a major customer of Maersk, emphasized the benefits of direct shipments from the Far East, including timely availability of materials and reduced stock holding, facilitating efficient production processes.
Mohammed Samara, CEO of Meridian Port Services (MPS), highlighted the broader implications for traders, industries, and consumers, citing shorter transit times and potential reductions in freight rates.
Samara attributed this success to substantial investments in port facilities, particularly Terminal 3's infrastructure, capable of handling large vessels and fostering transshipment opportunities.
Samara hinted at further developments, with additional shipping lines exploring similar services through the Port of Tema, reinforcing its status as a leading container hub in the sub-region.
