The Eastern Naval Command of the Ghana Navy celebrated its 2023 West Africa Soldiers Social Activities (WASSA) end-of-year get-together, bringing together both serving and retired officers, Fleet Chiefs, Ratings, and Defense Civilians.
Addressing the gathering, Rear Admiral Issah Adam Yakubu, the Chief of the Naval Staff, expressed appreciation for the dedication and contributions of the Naval Command to Ghana's overall security, despite facing various challenges.
He highlighted several significant achievements, including the successful hosting of the third edition of the International Maritime Defence Exhibition and Conference (IMDEC) at Burma Camp.
The IMDEC event commemorated the launch of the Ghana National Integrated Maritime Strategy by the President, aiming to enhance collaboration among key stakeholders within Ghana's security architecture and international partners for a secure maritime domain.
Rear Admiral Yakubu noted that such initiatives were instrumental in safeguarding Ghana's vibrant blue economy.
He praised the outstanding dedication of naval personnel in engaging in various internal and external operations. The Chief of Naval Staff highlighted the acquisition of two Bambi-class boats, a testament to the government's efforts at retooling the navy.
Rear Admiral Yakubu commended the professionalism of personnel on the United Nations Peace Support Operation, emphasizing their contribution to Ghana's international reputation and the pursuit of global peace and security.
Internally, he acknowledged the courage and resilience demonstrated by troops engaged in operations across the country, especially in Operation Boafo, which supported civil authorities during disasters.
Operation Boafo showcased the navy's role in assisting flood victims in parts of the Volta region affected by the spillage of the Akosombo and Kpong dams.
The efforts of naval personnel brought relief to the victims, demonstrating the navy's commitment to maintaining peace and security, not only at sea but also on land.
Rear Admiral Yakubu congratulated the navy for winning all the awards in this year's Chief of Defence Staff's Prize Essay, recognizing outstanding performances and hard work.
He urged all naval personnel to use the festive season to strengthen ties with their loved ones, show care and compassion to the needy, and be each other's keepers.
Encouraging moderation during the festive season, Rear Admiral Yakubu advised naval personnel to be prepared for the tasks ahead in the new year.
He concluded by emphasizing the importance of sailing with purpose, navigating with resilience, and serving with professionalism and loyalty to the country and fellow sailors.
