Price of DStv Decoder in Ghana 

There are four types of  DStv decoders. They are:

1. HD zapper Decoder   – GH¢139
2. HD zapper decoder + Dish kit + 1 Month Access  –  GH¢169
3. Explora – GH¢499
4. Explora + Dish kit + Install + Smart LNB – GH¢854

What is the difference between DSTV Zapper and Explora Decoders?

To be able to enjoy DSTV's services, you need a decoder which is a hardware component of the subscription. There are two different kinds of decoders available for customers to choose from. The most sought-after ones are the Zapper HD decoder and the Explora decoder.

What then distinguishes these two decoders?

DSTV Zapper HD decoder

The Zapper HD decoder is a budget decoder that gives more value to its users. The decoder provides clear HD pictures with XtraView capability based on the bouquet subscription (works with DStv Premium, DStv Compact, DStv FamilyDStv Indian, DStv Bue (Portuguese) bouquet, All DStv Francaise (French) bouquets subscriptions).

The XtraView functionality allows two qualifying decoders to be linked together in one household without having to pay for two full subscriptions. Depending on the allowed decoder combination, users can get up to three different channels on three different TVs at the same time: 1110 – 1110: This option gives users two different channels in two different rooms with all the interactive applications (such as SuperSport Active & Weather 24) in both rooms.

The Zapper HD decoder also provides the following values;

• Users are able to set reminders for channel views
• Parental controls to restrict kids' access
• Interactive guide that enhances channel navigation, and
• Great search options

In Ghana, a Zapper HD decoder plus a full Dish Installation kit and a 1-month free Access subscription cost GH¢169. The Zapper HD decoder alone without the Dish Installation Kit can be purchased at GH¢139.

DSTV Explora decoder

Explora is a premium HD decoder that offers all the values of the Zapper HD decoder in addition to some extra features that can not be found on Zapper. The Explora decoder adds DSTV Catch-Up, Playlist, and More recording time features to all of the Zapper HD features it provides to its users.

Also, Explora is the only decoder at the moment that allows users to enjoy the Box Office service; a movie rental service by DSTV.

Users of Explora decoders have much more customization opportunities. You are able to record and watch later your favourite movies, playback and even pause play.

An Explora decoder with the full Dish installation Kit plus a Smart LNB can be purchased at GH¢854 in Ghana. The decoder alone without the dish installation kit and the Smart LNB can be purchased at just GH¢499

If you want extra value and the freedom to customize your view, we recommend that you go in for DSTV Explora Decoder. However, if on a budget and still wants to get value for money, go in for the Zapper HD decoder.

DStv Ghana Packages Subscription Payment Methods (Ways to pay)

To stay connected, you need to pay your monthly subscription fees. Here are the payment options you can consider:

1. You can make payment for your DStv subscription at any MultiChoice Africa Branch near you.
2. Alternatively, you can make payment using any of the following fintech services: MTN Mobile Money, ExpressPay, AirtelTigo Money and SlydePay.

To recharge your DStv with MTN Mobile Money, you will need to register for Mobile Money. In the process, you will be asked to choose a four-digit secret code that you will always use to make Moblie Money Transactions.

1. Dial *170# on your MTN Device
2. Select option 2 (pay bill).
3. Select DStv.
4. Enter the Smartcard number.
5. Input reference number (eg June 2019 Subscription).

How to Recharge DStv Ghana with Eazy Self-service

The DStv Eazy Self-Service is a self-care service by MultiChoice to help with paying, upgrading, and downgrading DStv subscriptions as well as troubleshooting some issues that may come up with the decoder as well.

Here are the detailed steps on how to recharge with DStv Eazy Self-Service:

1. Visit the DStv Self-Care portal here
2. Enter your DStv smart card number
3. Verify the captcha
4. Enter the appropriate amount as per your subscription/the subscription you want to change to

2. Go to my account, Choose change Pin.
3. Enter old Pin which is a default number 1234
4. Enter new, Then your SimCard will be activated for Airtel Money.

10. Do the apps work like those on a phone, where you can go to the app store and just download apps you want to use? No. The apps available on the DStv Explora Ultra are automatically added based on agreements between DStv and these service providers. When customers connect this device to the internet, all available apps will automatically be displayed and available for use. There is no need to download the apps. Customers are not able to add additional apps and there is no “app store”.
11. Who should buy a DStv Explora Ultra? The Explora Ultra has all the features of a satellite PVR and although it can be used without an internet connection, is best suited for homes with internet to allow users to also enjoy the benefits of value and choice that streaming and other apps provide. It is suitable for :1. Families looking to add PVR functionality to their homes and also wanting access to the depth of content offered by 3rd party service providers.
    2. Existing PVR customers who want to add more ways of enjoying content as it is XtraView capable and can be linked to existing PVRs.

Some of the services will not require a separate subscription. For convenience, customers are able to add both Showmax and Netflix to their DStv accounts (and only make one payment a month).
20. Will you restrict access to those apps based on your DStv subscription – as an example, only allow DStv Premium customers to use a 3rd party app? No, any customer with an active DStv subscription and Access Fee will be able to access and use the 3rd party apps when connected to the internet. Separate subscriptions may be required for some of those apps.
21. Do customers need to sign in separately for 3rd party apps when using them? Yes, customers will need to sign in to any app when using it for the first time. Further use may require occasional sign-in (the need is however determined by each individual service).
22. Can a customer continue to use this decoder to view content on 3rd party apps? No. Full use of this decoder, including access to the features available when connected to the internet, requires an active DStv subscription together with the monthly Access Fee.
23. Why do customers need an active DStv subscription to use 3rd party apps on the DStv Explora Ultra? The DStv Explora Ultra is an expensive, subsidised device for DStv customers to enjoy other services alongside their DStv subscription. There are many other devices and means of direct access to use 3rd party apps directly should a customer so wish.
24. This is the first time you have had TWO PVR models in the market at the same time. Why is that? Why did you not choose to replace the existing model instead? Our existing Explora model will sell at a lower price point than the Explora Ultra. The Explora Ultra is our premium model with the benefits of streaming apps, 4K and Dolby Atmos capability. The availability of both models offers our customers a choice when moving to a PVR or when adding another decoder to their home set-up.
25. Will you be selling this decoder in a bundle that includes data/internet connection and subscription to the other content available via the decoder (example: Showmax)? There will be special offers and promotions from time to time. Please visit our website for available offers.
26. Will customers be able to download content from the apps and watch offline? No, content from the streaming services can only be streamed. Streaming services restrict the download of content to mobile devices only.

2. What do I need to get Showmax on my DStv Explora? You need internet at home. Showmax requires an internet connection of at least 2Mbps. 6. What is a DStv Smart LNB?All DStv satellite installations make use of an LNB (low-noise block downconverter). The LNB is the receiving “arm” that you see mounted on your satellite dish. It collects radio waves from the dish and converts these into a signal that your decoder can understand. There are many types of LNBs, ranging from a single LNB (used with our single view decoders) to quad LNBs and UniCable LNBs.The DStv Smart LNB has been specially designed and manufactured for DStv to meet the growing needs of our non-commercial installations. It is not suitable for multiple-unit dwellings (like complexes and apartments).MultiChoice recommends the DStv Smart LNB for all DStv Explora and most XtraView installations (when installed in a Single Unit Dwelling, ie. where customers make use of their own satellite dish). From a technical viewpoint, the DStv Smart LNB combines the features of a DStv Switch into a single UniCable LNB and offers a single-cable solution for the distribution of multiple satellite signals. We launched the DStv Smart LNB with the LMX500 model, and in May 2016, will be replacing this with the LMX501. Model LMX500 – has 24 user bands, 4 UniCable outputs and 2 Universal outputs. 7. How much does the DStv Smart LNB cost and where can I get one? The recommended retail price of the DStv Smart LNB is R449. It is available via our Accredited Installers, MultiChoice Service Centres and DStv Agencies.
   We recommend that all changes to existing installations, including the replacement of LNBs be done by DStv Accredited Installers. 
8. Which decoders are compatible with the DStv Smart LNB? All our decoders can be installed with a DStv Smart LNB, however, some XtraView combos may require the use of multi-switches with a Quad LNB.  Please chat to your local DStv Accredited Installer for more info.
9. Why does the installation of the DStv HD Decoder not include a DStv Smart LNB? Although the DStv HD Decoder does work with a DStv Smart LNB, the recommended installation for a single view decoder is a single LNB and an 80cm dish.
   You can select to do the installation with a DStv Smart LNB, however, there will be an additional charge for this. 
10. Do unused ports on the DStv Smart LNB have to be terminated? Only the unused UniCable ports need to be terminated (this is to prevent signal degradation). Termination must be done using the supplied 75ohm terminator. Three of these terminators (“caps”) are packaged with the DStv Smart LNB. There is no need to terminate the Universal ports.
11. What are some of the benefits of using the DStv Smart LNB? The DStv Smart LNB has been specially designed for use in DStv installations where customers make use of their own satellite dishes. The DStv Smart LNB has been tested locally with our decoders and other DStv-approved equipment used in our installations.MultiChoice has a new satellite that allows for high-band transmissions. Our DStv Smart LNBs are high-band capable, ensuring that your installation is capable of receiving these signals.*The DStv Smart LNB allows for a simplified and more cost-effective installation. Multiple decoders can be connected to the DStv Smart LNB without the need for a multi-switch/ DStv Switch (resulting in a cost-saving). The cable goes directly from the LNB to the decoder. This allows for a shorter cable run and for decoders to be in different rooms (currently, many are together in the same room as the switch). This allows for more flexible installation solutions (including the easier connection between HD decoders and HD TVs via HDMI cables). If you use the DStv Smart LNB when installing one decoder, there is no need to change your LNB when upgrading to XtraView.We recommend that all changes to existing installations, including the replacement of LNBs be done by our DStv Accredited Installers.* Older decoder models (Dual View Decoder and the SD PVR) are not capable of receiving high band transmissions, even if installed with a DStv Smart LNB.

DStv Explora (Model 3B)

1. What is the DStv Explora (Model 3B)? The DStv Explora (Model 3B) is the decoder that will replace the DStv Explora (Model 3A) early in 2021. The DStv Explora (Model 2A) will at that stage, no longer be manufactured. It is entirely manufactured in South Africa and has all the features customers have become used to – including up to 110 hours of recording space, DStv Catch Up, BoxOffice and Showmax. This model replaces the 3A and does not have different or additional features.
2. When will the DStv Explora (Model 3B) be available to customers? It is anticipated to be available in retail outlets as well as MultiChoice Service Centres and Agencies within the first few months of 2021.
3. How much is the DStv Explora (Model 3B)? The recommended retail price for the DStv Explora (Model 3B) will be the same price point as Model 3A.
4. What is the recommended installation for the DStv Explora (Model 3B)? The recommended installation is the same for all our DStv Explora models.
