Mrs Justina Marigold Assan, the Central Regional Minister, has called for enhanced city-based development partnerships between Ghana and the United States of America (USA), citing the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 17.
She said the existing relationships between some cities in Ghana and the USA should be ramped up for mutual economic and social benefits.
The Minister made the call at a colourful durbar in Cape Coast, where US Vice President Kamala Harris paid a courtesy call on Osabarimba Kwesi Atta II, the Oguaamanhen.
Mrs Assan cited the example of the City of Cape Coast establishing a partnership with a city in the US focused on tourism and education.
She also appealed to the US Government for support systems to empower women in Ghana to reach the decision-making table.
Osabarimba Kwesi Atta II called for the construction of a Tourism Museum by the Oguaa Traditional Council as a legacy project for the Vice President to be part of that history.
Harris agreed and appointed a liaison officer to facilitate a direct working relationship between Cape Coast and the US.
After touring the Cape Coast Castle, Harris denounced the crime and atrocity of the slave trade, saying “the horror of what happened here must always be remembered.”
She emphasized the importance of learning from history and carrying the knowledge gained towards the work of lifting up all people and recognizing the struggles of all people. She called for fighting for justice and freedom for all people and human rights for all people.
