Ghanaian actress Yvonne Nelson has urged the policy think tank IMANI Africa to lead a protest against the government of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo regarding the inconsistent power supply issue known as “dumsor.”
This call to action follows recent episodes of intermittent power outages in Ghana, sparking frustration among citizens.
Yvonne Nelson previously organized a large-scale protest, #DumsorMustStop, against the John Mahama administration in 2015 over similar electricity shortages. IMANI Ghana played a significant role in that protest's success.
On April 17, 2024, residents in the Ashanti region held a nighttime vigil in Kumasi to address dumsor challenges. Hundreds of protesters marched against the erratic power supply, expressing discontent with unpredictable blackouts.
Both energy experts and citizens have criticized the government's handling of the situation.
In a statement on social media, Yvonne Nelson mentioned that she is awaiting IMANI's invitation to join the vigil, reminiscent of their collaboration in 2015.
“IMANI Ghana, can we mobilize another vigil? I've been anticipating your outreach, just as you did years ago. The NPP and its leadership, including @NAkufoAddo, have disregarded the concerns of Ghanaians. DUMSORMUSTSTOP,” she remarked.
