Guinea-Bissau's President Umaro Sissoco Embalo has abruptly dismissed Prime Minister Geraldo Martins just a week after his reappointment, according to presidential decrees issued on Wednesday.
Former Prime Minister Rui Duarte de Barros has been appointed as Martins' replacement.
The unexpected move follows President Embalo's dissolution of Guinea-Bissau's parliament, which he claimed was in response to a foiled coup on December 1.
President Embalo accused the government of being passive in addressing the clashes that ensued.
Subsequently, Martins was reappointed as prime minister on December 12.
The presidential decrees did not specify the reason for Martins' dismissal, but sources close to the matter suggest a discord between the prime minister and the president.
De Barros, the newly appointed prime minister, previously served as Guinea-Bissau's minister of economy and finance.
He also held the position of commissioner at the West African Economic and Monetary Union before serving as prime minister in a transitional government from 2012 to 2014.
Guinea-Bissau has a history of political turmoil and has experienced several coups since gaining independence from Portugal in 1974.
Last week, police used tear gas to disperse opposition members of parliament who attempted to convene in defiance of President Embalo's decision to dissolve the house.
A date for new legislative elections has not yet been set.
