Dr. Da-Costa Aboagye, Chief Executive of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), has proposed the incorporation of foreign nationals visiting Ghana into the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), advocating for mandatory health insurance for visitors.
During an interview on Face to Face on Citi TV, Dr. Aboagye emphasized the benefits of enrolling foreign nationals in the NHIS, citing mutual protection for both citizens and visitors. He highlighted the importance of this initiative, particularly in light of the COVID-19 pandemic, where uninsured visitors posed challenges to the healthcare system.
Dr. Aboagye underscored the need to amend the NHIS Act to cover non-Ghanaians and ensure universal health coverage. He stressed the importance of visitors having mandatory health insurance upon entry to Ghana, proposing designated facilities to cater to their healthcare needs.
The NHIA CEO's call for the inclusion of foreign nationals in the NHIS reflects a proactive approach to safeguarding public health and enhancing healthcare access for all individuals in Ghana, irrespective of nationality.
