The Eastern Regional Education Directorate, in partnership with Zoomlion Ghana Ltd, has initiated a Waste Segregation pilot project in nine selected Basic Schools within the New Juabeng South Municipality. The project aims to promote waste segregation, particularly separating plastic waste from other forms of waste generated in schools, to facilitate recycling and mitigate environmental pollution.
Mr Godfried Caesar, Eastern Regional Schools Health and Education Programme (SHEP) Coordinator, highlighted the primary objective of maintaining clean school environments through waste segregation. He emphasized the importance of segregating plastic waste, such as water sachets and bottles, for recycling purposes. The revenue generated from selling plastic waste to recycling companies will be utilized to address essential needs within the schools, thereby enhancing teaching and learning.
The project also aims to combat environmental degradation caused by plastic pollution, which often results from indiscriminate waste disposal practices. Mr. Caesar stressed the need for support and collaboration from organizations to expand the project to all 52 schools in the Municipality and beyond, following a successful pilot phase.
Madam Faustina Shardey, Eastern Regional Coordinator of Zoomlion Ghana, noted that the initiative aligns with the ongoing “Zero Waste” campaign in Accra. Zoomlion Ghana Ltd provided each of the nine schools with two dustbins, liners, and other necessary accessories to facilitate the effective implementation of the waste segregation project.
The collaboration between the Eastern Regional Education Directorate and Zoomlion Ghana Ltd signifies a proactive approach towards addressing environmental challenges and promoting sustainable waste management practices within school communities. By instilling the habit of waste segregation at an early age, the project aims to instigate positive behavioural changes and foster a culture of environmental responsibility among students and staff alike.
