Road transport operators have issued a stern warning against the purported increase in public transport fares by some drivers, stating that such actions are illegal and must cease immediately.
In a press release, leadership of the transport operators highlighted that the reported fare hikes are in violation of the Administrative Instrument governing the review of public transport fares in the country. They emphasized that any fare increase must be in accordance with the established guidelines and consensus reached with stakeholders.
The operators acknowledged the recent adjustments in fuel prices and operational costs and assured the public that they are engaging stakeholders to consider these factors and agree on the way forward. A meeting with the Ministry of Transport was held on Wednesday, April 10th, 2024, to present their demands, and the outcome will be communicated to the public once consensus is reached.
The statement urged commuters not to pay any fare outside the existing fares stipulated by the Administrative Instrument. They called on regional administrations, metropolitan, municipal, and district assemblies, as well as station welfare committees, to ensure compliance with the existing fares and disregard any unauthorized increases.
Both the General Secretary of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU of TUC, Ghana), Mr. Godfred Abulbire, and the General Secretary of the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC), Mr. Emmanuel Ohene Yeboah, signed the statement on behalf of the road transport operators.
The operators reaffirmed their commitment to advocating for the welfare of transport operators and urged all drivers to adhere to the directive and maintain confidence in the leadership.
