The National Democratic Congress (NDC) Parliamentary Minority has urged for the immediate exemption of health facilities from the ongoing unannounced electricity load-shedding exercises. Mr. Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, the Ranking Member on the Parliamentary Select Committee on Health and NDC MP for Juaboso made this demand in a statement released on Thursday.
Expressing deep concern over the impact of the power outages on essential health services, Mr. Akandoh highlighted reports indicating increased morbidity and mortality among patients, particularly in public health facilities.
The Minority called for government intervention, including the exemption of all health facilities from the current power outages and an audit of alternate power supply systems within these facilities to assess their capacity and reliability. They also urged for the procurement of emergency power supply systems if needed and adequate provision of resources for fuel and essential inputs.
Additionally, Mr. Akandoh appealed for a comprehensive impact assessment to evaluate the effects of the recent power outages on health facility operations, emphasizing the need for swift action to address these critical issues and ensure the delivery of vital health services to Ghanaians.
