A musician, Benjamin Kobla Doamekpor, has been arraigned before an Adentan Circuit Court on charges of causing harm after an alleged violent altercation with his girlfriend.
According to the police, Doamekpor purportedly assaulted his 23-year-old girlfriend upon discovering photos of her with another man.
The incident involved a forceful stamp on her right leg and a kick to her genitals during an argument over phone chats and pictures.
This altercation took place when the victim attempted to leave Doamekpor's residence after spending several days with him in Katamanso, in the Greater Accra Region.
The victim has suffered a fractured leg, requiring Plaster of Paris (POP) support, and is experiencing pain in her genitals as a result of the assault.
Doamekpor has pleaded not guilty to the charge of causing harm and is set to reappear in court on October 30, 2023.
During the court proceedings, counsel for Doamekpor requested bail for his client, emphasizing that Doamekpor was not a flight risk and was willing to cover the victim's medical bills. The defense also stressed Doamekpor's fixed place of abode.
In opposition to the bail request, the prosecution, led by Chief Inspector Maxwell Lanyo, highlighted the difficulties the police encountered in reaching Doamekpor to attend court. Although Doamekpor was on police inquiry bail, the police required his cooperation in their ongoing investigations.
Presiding over the case, Mrs. Sedinam Awo Balokah granted the prosecution's request, remanding Doamekpor into police custody.
The prosecution's account of the incident reveals that the complainant, a businesswoman residing in Labadi, is the older sister of Doamekpor's girlfriend.
The complainant reported the assault to the police on October 10, 2023, claiming that her sister had suffered physical harm during her visit to the accused person in Amrahia.
Allegedly, the victim was beaten by Doamekpor, leading to a fracture and the need for POP support. When the police arrived at the scene, they found the victim in a room in Katamanso, confirming the complainant's report.
The victim explained to the police that on September 25, 2023, she visited Doamekpor. On September 27, 2023, she wished to leave, but the accused prevented her from doing so. An argument ensued after Doamekpor confiscated her phone and discovered a chat and photos of her in bed with another man.
As a result of this discovery, Doamekpor allegedly assaulted the victim, causing her to fall. He purportedly “stepped” on her right leg, resulting in a fracture, and also kicked her in the genitals.
After the assault, Doamekpor reportedly rushed the victim to Saint Patrick Hospital in Koforidua for medical attention and instructed her to inform her relatives that she had fallen into a gutter and fractured her leg.
Doamekpor admitted the offense but asserted that he had not intended to injure the victim. The case continues as investigations proceed.
