The GaDangme Council has stepped in to clarify the controversial relationship between a traditional Ga priest and a 12-year-old girl, emphasizing that it is a betrothal and not a marriage.
The 63-year-old Gborbu Wulomo, Nuumo Borketey Laweh XXXIII, faced criticism after a video surfaced showing him in a traditional ceremony with the young girl, Naa Okromo. Defending his actions, Gborbu Wulomo stated that the arrangement did not entail the girl fulfilling marital duties.
In a statement issued by its President, Ayikoi Otoo, the Council confirmed engaging with Gborbu Wulomo and his elders to address the situation. It clarified that the relationship is considered a betrothal, altering the legal implications of the arrangement.
While acknowledging that betrothals can involve underage individuals, the Council stressed that this does not justify initiating a sexual relationship with the child, which could jeopardize her education and health.
The Council urged Gborbu Wulomo to address concerns surrounding the betrothal and prioritize the girl's well-being and rights. It emphasized the importance of safeguarding her education and ensuring that she continues to enjoy her childhood despite the cultural customs.
Furthermore, the Council called on the girl's parents to monitor her closely and remind her of her entitlement to a fulfilling childhood, emphasizing that she should continue her education until reaching the legal age of marriage.
