A Chinese national serving a one-year sentence at Nsawam Prison for theft and other serious offences has reportedly escaped custody. The escape occurred after the individual allegedly feigned illness and was transferred to the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital for medical attention.
Initially arrested at Tema, the individual was later transferred to Nsawam Maximum Security Prison. However, during the medical transfer, the inmate managed to escape, prompting an investigation into the incident.
The Ghana Prisons Service has interdicted the prison officer who was assigned to accompany the inmate during the transfer. Superintendent Abdul Latif Adamu, the Public Relations Officer of the Ghana Prisons Service, confirmed the escape and assured that efforts are underway to rearrest the fugitive.
In an interview with Eyewitness News, Mr. Adamu stated, “We have gotten a lot of leads that are proving to be successful in what we are doing.” The incident is currently under investigation, and the Prisons Service is working diligently to ensure the re-apprehension of the escaped inmate.
