Bright Kwashie, a 32-year-old driver, faces charges in an Accra Circuit Court for allegedly defrauding a businessman out of GH¢1,058,600 under the guise of selling auctioned vehicles and generator plants. Kwashie's accomplice, Divine Kwasi Agbeyagah, a teacher who impersonated a Customs Officer, is charged with abetment of crime.

The duo was granted bail of GH¢100,000 each with stringent conditions, following a request by the Attorney General's Office to review the case docket due to the significant amount involved.

The complainant, Philip Osabutey, a dealer in vehicles and general goods, was introduced to Kwashie by a friend. Kwashie claimed he could acquire auctioned vehicles through a Customs officer at the Aflao Customs Border Checkpoint. The vehicles in question included a Toyota Rav 4, a Mercedes-Benz S360, a Kia Picanto, and four generator plants, necessitating an additional GH¢67,000 for documentation.

Osabutey, convinced of the legitimacy of the deal, made various payments totalling over a million Ghana Cedis to multiple telephone numbers provided by Kwashie. However, after the promised goods failed to materialize, Osabutey contacted the police, leading to Kwashie's arrest and subsequent identification of Agbeyagah as his accomplice.

The case, which has attracted attention due to the high-profile nature of the fraud and the involvement of a supposed public servant, is set to continue on May 26, 2024.
