Mahama Ayariga, the Member of Parliament (MP) for Bawku Central, has condemned the recent shooting that led to the death of an immigration officer in Bawku, Upper East region.
The MP has called for an investigation into the matter and for the perpetrators to be brought to justice.
The unfortunate event occurred on Monday, April 3, 2023, when three immigration officers were shot at by unknown gunmen while travelling from Bawku to Missiga.
The attack left 42-year-old Philip Motey dead, while Eric Ayibiya, 30, and Laurence Afri, 42, sustained multiple gunshot wounds and are being treated at the Bawku Presbyterian Hospital.
In a statement, Mahama Ayariga condemned the incident, describing it as “most reprehensible and should not be repeated again.” He further urged the security agencies to investigate the matter and bring the culprits to justice.
He said, “An investigation into the matter must be conducted, and the perpetrators brought to book.”
According to the MP, the three immigration officers were in their private car on their way to buy food when they were attacked.
He expressed his condolences to the family of the deceased security personnel and extended his prayers to the wounded personnel.
Mahama Ayariga urged the government to take proactive measures to ensure lasting peace in Bawku.
“Let me, on behalf of the people of Bawku, express our sincere condolences to the families of the deceased security personnel and extend our prayers to the wounded. I urge the government to be proactive in advancing a lasting peace process in Bawku,” he stated.
As of the time of filing this report, no arrest has been made regarding the incident.
