Calm restored in Bawku after fatal shooting incident

Calm has returned to in the region following an incident where unknown gunmen opened fire into a gathering at the community centre on Wednesday, January 17. The incident resulted in three fatalities and left four others injured, leading residents to flee the area for their safety.

The casualties occurred during a reported gunfight between armed individuals and personnel, with three deaths and one person managing to escape. This recent incident adds to the toll, making it six people killed in the past week.

On Friday, January 19, 2024, women protesting the recent killings were reportedly fired upon by the , although the military denies the allegation. The Municipal Chief Executive for , Hamza Amadu, assured that armed military and police are present to prevent further attacks and maintain stability in the area.

“Everything is calm, just that everyone is in his/her zone, everybody is not moving to the other side. If you are in an area, and you are comfortable, you could move there quietly to conduct your business and move away. That is generally happening in Bawku. It is not as if there is an exchange of gunfire, it is calm, and everybody is conducting their business,” stated Hamza Amadu.

He further mentioned that military personnel are conducting patrols, taking precautions to prevent injuries or clashes between feuding factions. The police are also actively involved in maintaining peace.

The Member of for Bawku Central, Mahama Ayariga, has condemned the recent shooting incident in his constituency. The situation remains closely monitored by both local authorities and concerned stakeholders as efforts are made to restore lasting peace to the region.
