Former Ghanaian international footballer, Asamoah Gyan, has been appointed as the lead for the “Youth and Sports” manifesto sub-committee on the Manifesto Committee of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer for the 2024 elections. Gyan, Ghana‘s all-time top scorer, joins a team of twenty-three others tasked with conducting a holistic review of the party’s 2016 and 2020 manifestos to formulate a pragmatic manifesto for the upcoming elections.
The committee, chaired by outgoing Majority Leader Osei Kyei Mensah-Bonsu, aims to engage with various stakeholders and involve sector ministers as advisors to create a forward-looking and practical manifesto aligning with the needs of the Ghanaian populace. Gyan’s role on the committee is expected to involve communicating the sports aspect of Dr. Bawumia’s manifesto.
This appointment follows a cryptic message Gyan shared on social media expressing the need for sports legends to come together and utilize their influence, network, and resources to attract investors into the country and make a meaningful impact on the youth in sports, including football, boxing, and other athletics.
Dr Bawumia’s Manifesto Committee, with Kojo Oppong Nkrumah as Vice-Chairman and Evron Hughes as Secretary, has been mandated to conduct a thorough review of the NPP’s previous manifestos in preparation for the 2024 elections.
