Ghana Tourism Authority identifies 7 points for tourism development along Greenwich Meridian line

In a recent interview with the Ghana News Agency, Mr George Nkrumah Ansere, Director of the Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) for the Tema Region, unveiled plans for tourism development along the renowned Greenwich Meridian line. The GTA has strategically identified seven points along this imaginary line, aiming to transform them into captivating tourist destinations.

Despite the Greenwich Meridian being an intangible concept, Mr. Ansere emphasized the significance of pinpointing these locations for tourism enhancement. These seven spots hold particular importance as they register a longitude of zero degrees when measured with a compass, signifying their intersection with the line stretching from the ocean to the equator. This distinction affords Tema the prestigious title of ‘Centre of the World’.

Among the identified areas are the premises of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana, Greenwich Congregation, the Tema Golf Club, Mankoadze, and the former site of the Meridian Hotel. Notably, Mr. Ansere revealed that the Mankoadze locale has been officially designated by the GTA as a prime tourism site. Plans are already underway to cultivate coconut plantations in the area, alongside other complementary attractions.

The choice of coconut plantations stems from the desire to showcase the health benefits associated with coconut products, aligning with broader wellness promotion efforts. Moreover, Mr. Ansere outlined plans for the expansion of the PCG Greenwich Meridian site, aimed at drawing both local and international tourists. This expansion initiative is anticipated to generate additional employment opportunities within the community, thus bolstering local economic prospects.

A landmark commemorating this endeavor is the Meridian Tower of the Presbyterian Church, bearing a plaque inscribed with the words “To the glory of God”. Unveiled on November 8, 1999, by His Royal Highness, Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, this monument serves as a testament to the historical and cultural significance of the Greenwich Meridian in Tema.

The GTA’s strategic identification of these key points along the Greenwich Meridian underscores Ghana’s commitment to leveraging its rich cultural and geographical heritage for sustainable tourism development. With plans underway for infrastructure enhancement and attraction diversification, Tema is poised to emerge as a vibrant hub for both domestic and international tourists, offering unique experiences steeped in history and natural beauty.
