The Ghana Mineworkers' Union of the Trade Union (GMWU) Congress-Ghana has adjusted its plans for picketing at the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources and Parliament. Originally scheduled for earlier dates, the demonstration will now take place on April 25 and 26, 2024.
This change comes after the Accra Regional Police Command informed the union of the unavailability of police personnel to assist with the demonstration on the initial dates.
According to Mr. Abdul-Moomin Gbana, the General Secretary of GMWU, the union is deeply concerned about the delay in revoking the mining lease of Future Global Resources Bogoso-Prestea mine. Despite recommendations from both the Attorney General and the Minister of Justice to revoke the lease, the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources appears to be hesitating.
The union's picketing aims to urge authorities to stop the delay tactics and take decisive action on the Future Global Resources Bogoso-Prestea mine. The statement emphasized that the non-operation of the mine has caused severe hardship for over 1000 union members and their families.
Future Global Resources, the current leaseholder, has been unable to inject capital to sustain operations since taking over in 2020. The union emphasized the urgent need for action to prevent further deterioration of the situation.
