Andrew Mitchell, the Minister of State of the United Kingdom for Development and Africa, has expressed disappointment at Ghana's recent passage of the LGBTQ+ Bill. In a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter) on Thursday, 29th February, Mitchell conveyed his concern, stating that the enactment of the bill could undermine the rights and freedoms enjoyed by Ghanaians.
Mitchell emphasized that if the bill were to become law, it would have broader implications for the freedoms of all Ghanaians. He urged Ghana to uphold human rights standards by adhering to its constitutional and international obligations.
This reaction comes in response to Ghana's Parliament passing the Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill after its third reading on 28th February 2024. The bill is currently awaiting presidential assent. Mitchell's statement underscores international scrutiny and concern regarding the potential impact of the bill on human rights and freedoms in Ghana.
