The Sunyani Senior High School (SUSEC) emerged as the winner of a climate change education and quiz competition, with the Seventh-Day Adventist Senior High School (SHS) in Fiapre, Sunyani West Municipality, finishing second.
SUSEC secured 52 points, while SDA SHS scored 37 points in the contest organized by the Centre for Climate Change and Gender Studies (3CGS), School of Natural Resources, University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR), with funding support from ActionAid Ghana.
In the basic school category, St Mary's Preparatory/Junior High School (JHS) won against Meredane Primary/JHS, both in Sunyani, with scores of 39 points and 34 points, respectively.
For their prizes, SUSEC received a cash prize of GhC600.00 and souvenirs, while SDA SHS received GhC400.00 and souvenirs. St. Mary's Preparatory/JHS received a cash prize of GhC500.00 and souvenirs, and Meredane Primary/JHS received GhC300.00 and souvenirs.
In his opening remarks, Professor Asiedu Berchie, the Dean of the School of Sciences at UENR, emphasized the critical and challenging effects of climate change. He stressed the urgent need for concerted efforts by all segments of society to prevent its continuous occurrence.
Dr. Mary Antwi, the Head of 3CGS, expressed enthusiasm for the success of the quiz, noting that it provided an opportunity for participants to gain a deeper insight into the causes, consequences, and potential solutions of climate change. She emphasized the importance of education and sensitization in addressing the issue effectively.
