To address longstanding concerns about road conditions in Sunyani Township and parts of the municipality, various road repair and development projects have commenced, significantly improving accessibility and easing vehicular traffic.
A recent visit by the Ghana News Agency (GNA) revealed that repair works, including pothole filling, have been carried out on several access roads within the township. Notably, attention has been given to the 10-kilometer Kuotokrom-Yawhima stretch, where construction work had previously been abandoned. During the visit, it was observed that work on the project had resumed, with contractors focusing on tarring and finishing touches on one side of the dual carriage road. The Sunyani-based construction firm, SAMES Construction Limited, is spearheading this project, which also includes additional stretches of road within the township.
Mr Dominic Afriyie, the site Engineer of SAMES Construction Limited, provided assurances that significant progress had been made, with approximately 2.4 kilometres of the stretch already tarred. He expressed confidence that the entire construction project would be completed within the year.
Additionally, repair works have been carried out on the main Sunyani-Abesim highway, addressing potholes and improving traffic flow. These repairs have been particularly beneficial for commuters, as previous potholes had caused significant delays, especially during peak hours.
Mrs. Victoria Darkwa, the Bono Regional Maintenance Engineer of the Urban Roads Department, highlighted that contracts had been awarded for repair works on major roads in Sunyani municipality and surrounding areas. She affirmed the department's commitment to addressing road maintenance needs.
Mr. Kwasi Ameyaw-Cheremeh, the Member of Parliament for Sunyani East, emphasized his dedication to monitoring and ensuring the rehabilitation of access roads within the municipality. He commended the government for its efforts, particularly in resuming work on the Kuotokrom-Yawhima stretch.
Furthermore, Mr Ameyaw-Cheremeh announced plans to commence construction works on standard astro-turf pitches in Abesim and Penkwase communities, aimed at nurturing football talent within the municipality.
Mr John Ansu Kumi, the Sunyani Municipal Chief Executive, highlighted the importance of improved road infrastructure in facilitating revenue collection and enhancing economic activities in the area. He expressed gratitude for the support received and recognized the contributions of stakeholders towards the development projects in the municipality.
