Kumasi, Ghana – The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) has recently obtained network licenses for six software packages, including Kingdom Geoscience Bundle, Harmony Enterprise, Piper, WellTest, SubPump, and PERFORM. This development is expected to further bridge the gap between industry and academia, empowering researchers and students at KNUST to conduct more advanced analyses and simulations.
S&P Global, a leading intelligence service provider, in partnership with Reservoir Management Group (RMG) Limited, a provider of petroleum geosciences and reservoir engineering services, presented these software licenses to KNUST. With an estimated worth of US$1.2 million, these cutting-edge engineering and geoscience software packages will enable KNUST to facilitate groundbreaking discoveries within the academic setting, enhancing the students’ preparedness for the job market.
To ensure the successful implementation and usability of the software, a management team from RMG, along with their partners from S&P Global, visited KNUST. They engaged in discussions with the Provost of the College of Engineering and the Vice-Chancellor of KNUST, aiming to seamlessly integrate the software into the university’s academic programs.
Nana Akwasi Ankamah, the Managing Director of RMG, emphasized the significance of these software licenses in the petroleum industry, noting their extensive usage by National Oil Companies and International Oil Companies for real-time decision-making. He stressed the importance of introducing KNUST students to these software tools before they enter the industry, thereby narrowing the gap between industry practices and academic training.
Mr. Ankamah expressed the possibility of extending this initiative to other universities, and he conveyed the intention to invite S&P Global for future webinars and training sessions.
Samuel Asiedu Duah, the Business Development Manager for RMG, highlighted the commitment of RMG and S&P Global to advancing education in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). He underlined the necessity of equipping the next generation of oil and gas professionals with hands-on skills and tools to navigate the most advanced industry software, ultimately enhancing their market value and employability.
Nalin Vatte, Associate Director for S&P Global, expressed confidence that the software licenses would optimize production and enhance the capabilities of the students at KNUST.
Professor George Yaw Obeng, representing the Provost of the College of Engineering, commended RMG and S&P Global for their generous contribution, noting its alignment with KNUST’s mission. He emphasized the importance of modern software tools for training students, conducting research, and effectively transferring knowledge to contribute to national development.
Prof. Emmanuel Donkor, Head of Petroleum Engineering at KNUST, highlighted the significant impact of the licenses on the academic work of students, providing them with the necessary skills for the industry. He explained that the validated licenses would allow for unrestricted usage, enabling academic work and research to be published without any hindrances.
Prof. Donkor emphasized the advantages of using authorized licenses, ensuring compliance and the ability to openly reference and utilize the software for academic purposes. The availability of validated licenses eliminates the limitations associated with pirated software, allowing for the inclusion of software usage in publications while complying with copyright regulations.
