Guinea notched a crucial victory in the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations Côte d'Ivoire 2023, defeating Gambia after a draw in their opening game against Cameroon.
The match, which saw limited chances in the first half, witnessed a breakthrough in the 70th minute when Guinea's Aguibou Camara scored the decisive goal.
The 22-year-old capitalized on a well-executed team play, receiving a pass from Morgan Guilavogui and converting it into the opening goal.
Despite Gambia's efforts to find the equalizer, Guinea's defence remained steadfast, thwarting any attempts.
In a bid to alter the course of the game, Gambia's coach, Tom Sainfait, introduced attackers Mohamed Badamosi and Ali Sowe into the match.
However, Guinea's resolute defence denied them the opportunity to make an impact.
With this win, Guinea now holds 4 points from two games and currently sits in the second position in the group standings.
Their upcoming challenge awaits them against already qualified Senegal at the Charles Konan Banny Stadium in Yamoussoukro on Tuesday, January 23.
On the other hand, Gambia, still seeking their first points in the tournament, will face Cameroon in their last group-stage match on the same date, January 23.
The outcome of these matches will determine the final standings and the teams advancing to the knockout stage of the competition.
