A team of officials from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), led by Executive Director Dr. Henry Kwabena Kokofu, has taken decisive action to enforce environmental regulations by shutting down three non-compliant industries in the Tema metropolitan area.
During their visit, several environmental violations were uncovered, including pollution and the exposure of workers to hazardous substances. Consequently, Dr. Kokofu ordered the immediate closure of the following industries: Non-Ferrous Company Limited, Success Africa Limited, and Syntec Ghana Limited.
Dr. Kokofu stressed the importance of a safe working environment for employees, stating, “You deserve to work in a very congenial environment just like any other person.
” He expressed concern over potential health impacts on workers and pledged to bring in public health experts to conduct tests.
The EPA head highlighted the seriousness of the situation, emphasizing, “We will temporarily close down the factory and summon the owners to the head office in Accra to come and explain why they are working under these conditions.”
Workers from these industries spoke out about their challenging work environments and insufficient remuneration. Amidst grievances of exposure to hazardous chemicals, one worker lamented, “Because of the acid infection, some of the workers have stopped.”

Dr. Kokofu extended his warning to all industries and individuals contributing to environmental pollution, urging public support in reporting violations. He also discussed upcoming measures to address vehicular emissions.
The EPA called for waste segregation to curb pollution and emphasized that adhering to environmental laws is vital for tackling climate change and achieving the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030.
