The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has advised the government to adopt a pragmatic strategy for paying road contractors to prevent the abandonment of project sites. During a meeting with Mr Francis Asenso-Boakye, the sector minister, at the Manhyia Palace, Otumfuo emphasized the importance of releasing available funds to contractors to keep them on-site, rather than waiting until all debts are cleared.
He highlighted that even small payments would discourage contractors from abandoning sites and urged the Minister to consider this proposal to safeguard road infrastructure investments. Otumfuo pointed out that the frequent abandonment of sites due to lack of funds only leads to the deterioration of roads, calling for a change in approach to protect these investments.
Emphasizing the crucial role of good roads in national development, Otumfuo stressed the need to prioritize road construction nationwide. He charged the Minister to collaborate closely with stakeholders to enhance the country's road network.
Mr Asenso-Boakye sought the Asantehene's blessings before inspecting various road projects in the region. Among the projects visited were the Sunyani Road in Kumasi, the Suame Interchange, and the construction of the Atafoa bridge, as well as road projects in the Kwabre East Municipality and Kwabre South District.
The Suame Interchange, being executed by Rango Construction Company Limited, is a significant project aimed at reducing congestion and travel time. Mr. Asenso-Boakye commended the contractors for their progress and emphasized the importance of timely completion and quality work.
Acknowledging the challenges inherent in such projects, Mr. Asenso-Boakye assured that the government is committed to ensuring timely completion to maximize the benefits for the people. He underscored the socio-economic impact of the Suame Interchange, not only for Kumasi but also for neighbouring regions.
