Asamoah Gyan, former captain of the Black Stars, expressed his disappointment with some Black Meteors players following their underwhelming draw against Guinea in the ongoing 2023 U-23 Africa Cup of Nations on Friday.
The draw in their final group game resulted in their elimination in the first round of the Olympic qualifying tournament.
Gyan, who participated in the 2004 Olympic Games, criticized certain players for hogging the ball and behaving as though they were more important than the team.
In a tweet, the Ghana all-time top scorer stated, “What I saw in this Black Meteors team is some players think they are bigger than the whole team. Small hype and fame? SMH.”
He emphasized that modern football is not solely about what players do with the ball, but also about their actions without possession. Gyan observed players who believed they could play alone and stressed the importance of teamwork and defending when not in possession.
The Black Meteors' failure to qualify for the Olympics means that by the time the 2024 Olympic Games are held in Paris, it will have been 20 years since their last participation in the prestigious multi-sport event.
