The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has reported that the electricity power supply from the Sogakope Bulk Supply Point (BSP) is expected to be delayed for several months due to flooding caused by the spillage of the Akosombo Dam.
As a precautionary measure to safeguard the Sogakope Station, the Company temporarily shut down the Bulk Supply Point.
This, however, resulted in power disruptions affecting the Sogakope, Anloga, Keta, Akatsi South, Abor, and North Tongu districts.
To ensure continued electricity supply, power has been rerouted to Adidome and its environs from Juapong, while other towns are receiving electricity from the Aflao Bulk Supply Point (BSP).
Mr. Benjamin Obeng Antwi, the Volta Regional Public Relations Officer of ECG, explained to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that the decision to keep the Sogakope BSP closed was based on the anticipation that it might not be operational for several months.
He added that the ECG's efforts were focused on finding a long-term solution to ensure an uninterrupted power supply to customers even if the situation extended for six months or more.
Mr. Antwi also highlighted that the ECG had upgraded its network and urged customers to prioritize safety.
Moreover, with communities now receiving electricity from the Aflao BSP, the overall situation has seen an improvement.
On a related note, the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) is grappling with electricity shortages, impacting its ability to maintain water supply to areas affected by the floods.
Mr. Francis Lamptey, Regional Chief Manager of GWCL, stated that water was being rationed in the affected areas, depending on the availability of power supply. In response to this challenge, GWCL is implementing a parallel distribution system to service flood victims from Aflao.
Currently, GWCL's headworks at Agordome are supplying 5,500 cubic meters out of a total capacity of 7,570 cubic meters, resulting in a shortfall of 2,070 cubic meters, equivalent to 455,620 gallons.
Mr. Lamptey explained that communities such as Avorvi, Old Agorkpo, Agorkpo New Town, Hospital, Toklokpo, Sokpoe, Tefle, Wume, Agodo, Vodaphone, Comboni, Fievie, and Medical City are part of a weekly rotation for water rationing.
Water supply is contingent on the availability of electricity. Mr. Lamptey also expressed concern about the increasing flooding around the Headworks precinct and hopes that the situation will improve in the near future.
