Mr. Rabiu Awal, the Akan Constituency Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Oti Region, has announced his intention to vie for the upcoming Parliamentary Candidate (PC) slot following the passing of Alhaji Rashid Bawa, the former Diplomat and Akan NPP Parliamentary candidate for the 2024 polls.
Expressing his interest in the position, Mr. Awal emphasized his deep roots in the constituency and his familiarity with the challenges facing its constituents. He highlighted his track record of hard work and dedication to the party, having been elected as Chairman in 2018 and re-elected unopposed in May 2022.
Mr. Awal asserted that his candidacy would bring unprecedented development projects to the Akan Constituency, citing his close collaboration with the late Alhaji Rashid Bawa and his adeptness at lobbying for projects. He emphasized his commitment to grassroots activism and pledged not to disappoint party faithful.
However, Mr. Awal faces competition from Lawyer Tapha Tassah, an Accra-based private Legal Practitioner, in the upcoming primary scheduled for Saturday, April 27, 2024. In the previous PC election held on December 2, 2023, the late Alhaji Rashid Bawa emerged victorious with 492 votes, while Lawyer Tassah's younger brother, Abubakar Safiwu Tassah, secured 103 votes, and Alhaji Tanko Issifu Yakubu received 17 votes.
