Ghana invests GH¢10.5 Million in Mim Water Supply System operationalization

The Ghanaian government has invested GH¢10,517,852 in the operationalization of the Mim Water Supply System in the Ahafo Region. The Mim Water Supply System is designed to provide potable drinking water to the people in the region. The Minister of Sanitation and Water Resources, Dr Freda Prempeh, made the announcement during the inauguration of the facility in Mim, Asunafo North Municipality. The investment included various components such as the mechanization of boreholes, construction of pump houses and solar farms, installation of pipe fittings, and the rehabilitation of standpipes and high-level tanks.

The government has initiated several water programs and projects under the “Water for All Agenda” to ensure the sustainable delivery of water services across the country. Dr. Prempeh highlighted the strategic goal of providing adequate, safe, affordable, and reliable basic water services to all regions by 2030, aligning with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The government has been working on various rural water projects, with completed and ongoing initiatives aimed at improving water supply and sanitation infrastructure.

Dr. Prempeh emphasized the importance of sustainability in water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) service delivery. The government is undertaking reforms in the rural water sub-sector, including transforming the Community Water and Sanitation Agency (CWSA) into a rural water utility. This transformation aims to address remaining service delivery challenges in rural communities and ensure continuous water services. The Minister called for the cooperation of stakeholders and local communities to maintain existing infrastructure and support the sustainability of WASH services.

The Mim Water Supply System was initially constructed in 2003 but faced challenges, leading to its breakdown in 2009. The CWSA took over the system in 2018 and has since rehabilitated existing boreholes, drilled new boreholes, installed iron removal plants, and reconstructed the distribution network to operationalize the water system.
