Ms. Veronica Obeng, an Accountant and TV Host, is embarking on a remarkable journey to set a Guinness World Record for the longest reading marathon. Starting on Saturday, March 24, 2024, Ms. Obeng plans to read aloud continuously for at least 155 hours, spanning approximately six days and a few extra hours.
Motivated by her desire to obtain global recognition for local authors and to champion the culture of reading, Ms. Obeng sees the Guinness Book of World Records as a platform to showcase talents and contributions to the community. As the Managing Partner of Africa Must Read, a non-profit organization, she aims to promote literacy and personal development, viewing it as a pathway to national progress.
Ms. Obeng's attempt will take place at the Aburi Botanical Garden in the Eastern Region of Ghana, and she is seeking support from individuals, corporates, and stakeholders in the book and publishing industry. Her goal is not only to break the current record of 124 hours but also to inaugurate additional Africa Must Read book clubs across schools in the country and beyond.
Africa Must Read, under Ms. Obeng's leadership, works to enrich African lives and build communities through literacy. Through initiatives such as book fairs, libraries, and clubs, the organization aims to provide youth with access to quality literature and foster a lifelong love for reading.
Ms Veronica Obeng's ambitious endeavour not only aims for personal achievement but also serves as a catalyst for promoting literacy and celebrating the written word, both locally and globally.
