Sports Ministry settles Black Queens’ WAFCON bonuses after Egypt victory

The Black Queens have finally received their outstanding bonuses from their performance at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) following their emphatic win over Egypt on Tuesday.

The Ministry of Youth and Sports settled the payments shortly after the team’s 7–0 aggregate victory over the Cleopatras in the 2026 WAFCON Qualifiers, played at the Accra Sports Stadium.

Each player received a cheque of $9,000 (GHS equivalent) for contributing to Ghana’s third-place finish at the continental tournament held in Morocco in July 2024.

According to Joy Sports, $500 was withheld as tax, leaving the players with a net payment reflecting the deductions.

The development brings an end to weeks of tension between the team and the ministry. The Queens had earlier threatened to boycott their second-leg clash against Egypt, skipping two training sessions to press for their demands.

However, after several meetings with ministry officials, the players resumed training on the eve of the game, a move that paid off as they delivered a dominant performance to secure qualification to the 2026 WAFCON.

The cheques were presented to the players at their base, Erata Hotel, shortly after the match, marking the resolution of the long-standing bonus dispute.
